 Unit 10 The world around us (Period 2---Reading)

                           Are we endangered?

                                                                                          Teacher: 翟美香

Teaching Aims:

1. Do some reading to improve the students’ reading ability.

2. Help the students to know we must do what we can to protect the animals and plants around us.

3. Learn and master the following words and expressions:

expert, survive, bright, harm, species, habitat, environment, become endangered

Teaching Important Points:

1. Improve the students’ reading ability.

2. Help the students understand the text better.

Teaching Difficult Point:

How to help the students improve their reading ability an help them to know the importance of environmental protection.

Teaching Methods:

1. Fast reading and careful reading to get the general idea of the text.

2. Discussion and explanation to help the students understand the text better.

3. Group work and individual work to make every student work in class.

Teaching Aids:

1. the blackboard and a small blackboard.

Teaching Procedures:

Step I Greetings (1’)

Greet the whole class as usual.

Step II Revision and Lead-in (3’)

T:  In the last period, we talked about animals. We know that animals are friends of human beings.Today, we are going to learn more about animals, plants and human beings from a passage: Are we endangered?

Step III Reading (24’)

1. Pre-reaing (5’)

Ask the students to discuss the following questions before reading:

1)  What do human beings need to survive?

2)  What do plants and animals do to survive?

3)  What do animals do to survive in places where it’s very hot or cold, where there isn’t much water, or where it’s difficult to find food?

2.Fast-reading(9’)

1)       Ask the students to read the passage quickly and find out the general ideas of each paragraph.

2)       Find out the main idea of the whole passage.

3. Carefully-reading(10’)

Ask the students to read the passage carefully, then answer the following questions:

1)  Can we human beings live alone on the earth? Why?

2)  Do we always treat plants and animals in the right way?

3)       Can you tell some main reasons that make animals and plants become endangered?

4)       What can we do to protect animals and plants that are being endangered?

Step IV Discussion(Group-work)(10’)

Ask the students to read the second part in Post-reading to see what Jennifer will do everyday. Then, have a discussion about“Things I can do to protect our environment.” in groups and write a list. Ask some groups to report their work to the class.

Step V Summary and Homework(2’)

T: In this period, we’ve read a passage about plants, animals and human beings. We know it’s

very important for us to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered. We should do all we canto protect our environment.We have made a list of things that we can do inour daily life. I hope you can remember to do them from now on. Can you? OK. That’s all for today! See you!
